Survival Plants

free survival courses

If you want to survive in the wilds, you need to grow and harvest valuable plants. These resources can be edible, medicinal, or wetland and desert plants. Read on to learn more about how these plants can benefit you in times of need. Here are some examples of plants you should cultivate:

Edible plants

If you're a survivalist and don't have a kitchen, there are a number of edible plants you can pick up in your home garden. Pine trees are good sources of both protein and calories, for example. The young male cones that grow in spring can be eaten. The needles from lodgepole pine have toxins, and they are not edible. You can however chew the inner bark to get vitamin C and the young twigs can be eaten. The new growth, stalks, as well as the leaves, can all be eaten.

Dandelion is another plant you can harvest to ensure your survival. Although the young root can be eaten raw for survival, it is best to avoid eating the flower buds. The leaves can be boiled and eaten the same way as potatoes. They are very nutritious and high in vitamin A, calcium. Dandelion should not be eaten from chemically treated plants. You can however, pick the leaves from the plant and keep the flowers buds for another purpose.

Medicinal herbs

Medicinal medicinal plants are natural remedies that have been developed over thousands of years. They are used for everything from wound care to preventing infections. The following are some of the most popular medicinal plants used around the world. Birchbark makes a great example. It can be boiled for 10 minutes in hot water. A quarter teaspoon of bark can be brewed into a cup of hot water. But, be aware that too much Birchbark can cause stomach upset and nausea.

Despite the huge demand for herbal medicines, there is still very little information about how to cultivate these plants. Currently, medicinal herbs are only grown in small areas close to the homes of farmers. This situation should change. It is possible to restore barren lands or to allocate medicinal plants to one specific place based on farmer preferences. Furthermore, medicinal plants can be grown to preserve wild genetic diversity and create standardised products. It will allow for better quality control, identification of species and improve prospects for genetic improvement.

Wetland plants

Wetland plants evolved for survival in this unique environment. These plants are not provided with enough light to enable them to perform their metabolic functions. Anaerobic glycolysis produces inefficient end products and is inefficient. Without light, plants die and become inefficient. Hydrophytes have, however, evolved to live in such harsh conditions. They are able to adapt to the environment with unique abilities.

The presence of bacteria is another important characteristic of wetlands. Facitive anaerobes must be able to switch between anaerobic or aerobic breathing. Hydrogen sulfuride, which is the reason for the distinct smell of wetlands, can be produced by certain bacteria. Because they are facultative anaerobes, some plants can tolerate high levels of sulfur. They are thus essential to the energy web.

Desert plants

Even in dry conditions, plants can survive without water, such as juniper or creosote. These plants can produce fiber for slow matches, and wood for fireboards. The Juniper tree, which can survive for hundreds of year, is also a good source of wood to make hunting bows or bow-andarrow sets. Yucca plants are rich in survival materials such as fiber for cordage, edible roots, soapy roots, and young flowers.

You will need to be able to identify desert plants, regardless of whether you are planning on exploring the wilds or just visiting the area for a weekend. Some plants are toxic and should not be eaten, but others aren't poisonous. Cactus is an example. It has a spine-like spine along its stems that protects it against animals. This plant can live for many years. Some specimens such as the Joshua tree, California, may even last more than 1,000 years.

FAQ

Do I need to store guns?

Yes! Gun ownership is a right protected under the Second Amendment. It's important that you remember that not everyone is entitled to own firearms. Guns are not permissible for those with mental illness.

However, having a firearm at home can help save lives. The CDC reports that there have been over 33,000 accidental shooting-related deaths between 1999 & 2016.

The good news is that concealed weapons are allowed in most states. Even if you're not allowed in a state to carry a gun, there are still options.

What should I keep in my storage for supplies?

Ideally, you would like to have three months' worth of supplies stored away. This means that you should have enough food, water, or other necessities to last three months.

This number will vary depending on the severity and nature of the emergency. There may not be anyone nearby to help you if your location is remote. Maybe there's no electricity grid.

If that is the case, it's best to plan for a longer-term scenario.

How do I doomsday prep on a budget?

It is difficult to prepare for the apocalypse. If you do have to prepare, here are three ways you can make sure you're prepared.

  1. You should ensure you have enough water and food. Do not be caught without supplies in the event of a disaster.
  2. Purchase a solar powered radio. If there's a power outage, this device will keep you informed about what's going on around the world.
  3. Learn how you can grow your own food. This way, you'll know exactly what you need to eat. This will also mean that you don't have to worry if you run out of ingredients.
